Idea Cellular plans to invest Rs 4200 crore in 3G network

Idea Cellular has informed the share market (BSE/NSE) that it would invest Rs 4200 crore in 3G network infrastructure, including erecting around 16000 towers by March, 2012. Kumar Mangalam Birla led Idea Cellular Limited was incorporated in 1995. Today it is among the top four mobile telephony players in India with an 11% all-India subscribers market share.

Idea Cellular launched its 3G operations in 10 cities across three circles in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. The company offering an unique plan that also lets users pay per minute of usage, rather than on amount of data downloaded. Idea Cellular will expand itself into 3700 towns by March 2012. At present the company have around 5000 3G towers and will expand them to around 16000 by the end of March 2012.

A total of Rs 10,000 crore will be invested in the 3G operations which includes Rs 5,800-crore the company paid to secure licenses for spectrum in 11 circles.
